Professor Kenneth Ingham, a leading historian of modern African history provides a lively introduction to a complex subject, demonstrating that African countries have drawn more deeply upon their inner resources in shaping their political character than is often realised, and that the intensity of traditional loyalty has varied greatly from country to country.
