First published in 1984, The Development of Planning Thought presents a critical and historical perspective on the development of planning. It spotlights the economic, political, and ideological dimensions of planning both in the UK, and through a case study of practice in Edinburgh.
The author introduces students to critical/political economy approaches to planning, and outlines theories of uneven development, the state and ideology, showing how the theories can be applied. The book thus puts students of planning history, urban planning, and planning theory in touch with a literature which had mushroomed in the late 1970s, both in the UK and overseas.
