The volume first briefly lays out foundational characteristics of human dubbing and subtitling before moving into a discussion of the hallmarks of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven dubbing and subtitling. Giampieri and Leonardi discuss the most recent advancements in automated AVT to set the stage for examining these dynamics at work in case studies from translator training to legal and medical domains. Chapters look at such examples as AI-powered voice-over and subtitling in an Italian film extract, cross-comparison of the dubbing of a contract reading across different automated voice-over platforms, and a cross-comparison of automatic captions and fansubbed titles in a medical lecture. While such examples focus on particular domains, registers, and contacts, they elucidate fresh insights into the analysis, developments, and challenges around automated AVT across different contexts, paving the way for future research amidst further developments around GenAI’s role in AVT more broadly.
