This is not a novel or novella, not a history or a travel book, not a memoir, nor just a few short stories that hang together with a few stanzas of poetry. Then, from 1965 to 1968, he is an Air Force officer in Berlin at Tempelhof Airport. The third story is about his return to Berlin in 2023, as a former journalist, a poet, and an octogenarian. Why was he returning? Because Americans are beginning to see what Germans saw nearly a century ago.
