Most students take notes in lectures. Far fewer ever open those notes again. And very few take notes in a way that actually helps memory. This guide covers what research says about note-taking, the eternal laptop or paper question, and a few concrete techniques that turn your notes into a study tool instead of a dead wall of text.

Why take notes at all?

Notes do two things, and it's easy to mix them up. The first is encoding: when you rephrase what the lecturer says, your brain has to process the content, and that strengthens memory by itself. The second is storage: the notes become an archive you can come back to.

The problem is that many students take notes as if only storage mattered. They try to write down everything, word for word. That kills almost the whole encoding effect, because you're transcribing instead of thinking. So the goal isn't to get everything down. The goal is to process.

Laptop or paper, what does the research say?

The most cited study in this area is Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014), "The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard". Students who took notes by hand did better on conceptual questions than those typing on laptops. Not because pens are magic, but because handwriting is slower. You simply can't keep up verbatim, so you have to summarize in your own words. And that's exactly the processing that strengthens memory.

But it's not as simple as paper always winning. Later studies (including Morehead and colleagues, 2019) show smaller differences, and laptops have real advantages. You can search your notes, restructure them afterwards, and type fast in calculation-heavy subjects. Here's the honest picture:

Three techniques that raise the quality

1. The Cornell method

Divide the page into a wide note column, a narrow cue column in the margin, and a summary box at the bottom. During the lecture you only write in the wide column. 2. Write down questions, not just answers

When the lecturer makes a point, write down the question that point answers ("Why does marginal utility decrease?") instead of just the answer. That leaves you with a ready-made quiz list. The research on active recall is clear on this: testing yourself beats rereading by a wide margin (Karpicke & Roediger 2008).

3. Process within a day

Notes have a short shelf life. Spend 15 minutes the same day or the day after filling gaps, marking what you didn't understand, and writing 3 to 5 questions from the material. That session, not the lecture itself, decides whether your notes become useful. Then spread your reviews over time following the principles of spaced repetition.

Is it better to take notes by hand or on a computer?

Should you write down everything the lecturer says?

No. Copying everything word for word gives worse learning than selective notes in your own words. Focus on main points, connections and examples, and flag what you don't understand so you can sort it out afterwards.
